About this course

Content

Description of technical systems and products. 3D modeling as a tool in product development and manufacturing. Use of CAD/CAM software for 3D modeling of machine parts and assemblies, technical drawing, simulation of mechanisms, basic finite element method analysis, 3D printing and CNC programming. Geometrical tolerances and analysis of measurement data.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The candidate shall have knowledge of 3D modeling, technical drawing and tolerances. The candidate shall know the basic methods used in product development and manufacturing of mechanical products.

Skills: The candidate shall be able to use CAD/CAM software to model products and do different types of simulations and analyses on the product models, as well as preparations for basic CNC machining and 3D printing. The candidate shall be able to make machine drawings based on a 3D model.

General competence: The candidate shall be able to discuss a technical product with a terminology that is understood by other engineers. The candidate shall know what is expected from a mechanical engineer who will work in the field of product development and manufacturing.

Teaching methods

The course uses theoretical and practical exercises. The students will complete a practical course in machining and welding, which also includes training in health, environment, and safety (HSE). A group project work will be carried out on development of a product, including construction of a prototype, partly by use of 3D printing.
