About this course

Content

The course is divided into modules:
Module 1 : Introduction
Module 2 : Piping system components
Module 3 : Drawings and other documents
Module 4 : Pressure/temperature/flexibility design
Module 5 : Materials
Module 6 : Fabrication, assembly and erection
Module 7 : Inspection, examination and testing
Module 8 : Mechanical completion/commissioning /preservation

Piping design is, in this course, defined as the layout and engineering of metal piping systems. The content of the modules is based on ASME B31.3 and piping relevant Norsok Standards. Training on and pipe stress analysis software Caesar II is part of this course.Caesar II is part of this course.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The candidate should upon completing this course
Understand:
1. That the use of codes, regulations and standards are the basics for safety and practical engineering of piping systems in process plants.
2. Piping terminology and how codes, regulations and standards are used in drafting and design of piping systems.
Know and describe:
1. Main content of ASME B31.3 and piping relevant NORSOK standards. 2. Forces acting on a pipe system in operating conditions.
3. Ways of controlling and reducing forces acting on a pipe system in operating conditions.
4. Operation and maintenance considerations as set forward in ASME B.31.3 and piping relevant Norsok standards
5. Commonly used metallic piping materials and their serviceability 6. Insulation and surface treatment of piping components and systems 7. Fabrication and control of prefabricated pipe spools.
8. Installation challenges and safety issues related to pipe spools. 9. Relevant inspection, examination and testing issues related to prefabrication of pipe spools.
10. Handover and finalization process of a piping installation.
11. Commonly used components in piping systems.
12. Piping documentation requirements.
Skills: The candidate should be able to use ASMEB31.3 relevant Norsok Standards and TR2000 for pipe design, drafting and simple calculations. The examinee should be able to do simple 3D modelling of piping and use a relevant computer program for stress evaluation of a simple 3D model. The candidate should have skills to read P&ID's and Isometric piping drawings with all their symbols.
General competence: The candidate has insight into environmental, health-related, social and economic consequences of products and solutions within the discipline, and is able to put these into an ethical and a product lifecycle perspective. The candidate knows how to impart knowledge, orally and in writing, in English, and contributes to make visible the importance of technology and its consequences. The candidate reflects on own professional performance. The candidate contributes to development and best practice by participating in professional discussions in the field, and by sharing knowledge and experience with colleagues and others. The candidate is ready to work as a junior engineer under the supervision of senior engineers
