Academic content:
Thermodynamics:
Transport of energy: radiation, thermal conductivity, heat transfer. Thermodynamic properties of pure substances.
Phase states: solids, liquids, gas and plasma.
Phase transitions: gas and liquid in mixed phase.
Thermodynamic quantities: internal energy, enthalpy, and entropy.
Phase transitions and processes: polytropic, adiabatic, isothermal, isochoric, and isobaric.
First law of thermodynamics: stationary and non-stationary processes.
Second law of thermodynamics: reversible and irreversible processes.
Thermodynamical cycles: energy production, heat pumps, and refrigeration cycles.
Materials technology:
Metal structures, solidification of metals and alloys, dislocations, metal strengthening, curing, recrystallization, material testing (destructive and non-destructive), heat treatment. Metal properties.
Applications of construction steel, corrosion-resistent steel, copper and it's alloys, aluminium and its alloys, magnesium, titanium, and high-temperature alloys.
Learning outcomes
Learning outcome:
Knowledge:
-The candidate has knowledge of construction materials structure, properties and uses. The candidate should be able to choose the right materials according to the function requirements and economic considerations in constructions.
-The candidate knows the fundamental concepts of determining the characteristics of a thermodynamic system.
-The candidate is aware of basic principles of energy conservation, energy transfer and energy conversion in conjunction with thermodynamics processes.
-The candidate is aware of relevant practical applications in thermodynamics.
Skills:
-The candidate can identify, plan and execute projects in their own fields, work tasks and experiments, both independent and team in material engineering.
General competence:
-The candidate has insight into health, safety and the environment and consequences of selected solutions within its field.
-The candidate can impart knowledge within its field to
Different audiences in both written and spoken, in Norwegian and English
