About this course

Content

The course is an introduction to generic principles and methods to formulate mathematical models of systems and processes in science and engineering. Topics covered include dimensional analysis, scaling, perturbation analysis, dynamical models, conservation laws, and applications.

Learning outcomes

1. Knowledge. The student masters generic principles and methods for the formulation and analysis of mathematical models of systems and processes in engineering and the natural sciences. This includes knowledge of dimensional analysis, scaling, perturbation analysis, dynamical models, and conservation laws. The student has some insight into the possibilities for performing analytical and numerical computations based on the model.

2. Skills. The student is able to formulate and qualitatively analyze mathematical models of a wide range of systems and processes.

3. General competence. The student can work in groups, and is able to communicate the results orally and in writing.

Teaching methods

Lectures and a obligatory modelling project in groups. Exercises are given, but are not mandatory. Lectures, all written documentation and the exam are given in English. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments including the exam.
