About this course

Content

The course is given every second year, next time spring 2028. The course addresses analysis and design of communication networks by means of queue and stochastic theory. Topics are: Queuing theory and network calculus. Model and problem formulations for communication networks, such as Time Sensitive Networks and Deterministic Networks. Source models and traffic characterization. Server models. Analysis of delay and loss, dimensioning of links and nodes, optimization. Strategies for traffic handling, scheduling, routing, and control.

Learning outcomes

A. Knowledge: 1) A broad knowledge of network mechanisms contributing to the provision of quality of service in communication networks. 2) An in-depth understanding of analytical models and methods in describing, studying and understanding traffic and traffic handling in communication networks, which include classical queueing analysis methods and network calculus. B. Skills: 1) To be able to communicate, reason and creatively think about traffic issues in communication networks. 2) To be able to quantitatively model and evaluate communication networks with respect to quality of service guarantees using classic queueing theory and / or traffic theories for communication networks.

The learning outcomes of TM8102 are directly related to UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (9.1: Develop sustainable, resilient and inclusive infrastructures, and 9.5: Enhance research and upgrade industrial technologies), and also contribute to goal 4 (4.7: Education for sustainable development and global citizenship).

Teaching methods

Lectures, self study, colloquia, and assignments.
