About this course

Content

The course provides an introduction to and understanding of the field of logistics in general, as well as the various elements of logistics systems. It also introduces organizational theory and systems understanding, which are essential for managing logistics within and across organizations. The course consists of one module on fundamental logistics (approx. 5 ECTS credits) and one module on fundamental organizational theory (approx. 2.5 ECTS credits).

Basic theories, concepts, principles, and methods are covered for the following topics:

  • Business models and control models
  • Production planning environments, principles and classification
  • Logistics in supply chains
  • Transport logistics
  • Manufacturing logistics
  • Lean philosophy and management
  • Sustainability in production and logistics
  • Industry 4.0, digitalization, and new technology for logistics
  • Organizational theory
  • Norwegian working life
  • Change management

Learning outcomes

The course is mandatory in the first year of the INGLOG study program (Identity Course 1). It provides a fundamental introduction to the fields of logistics and organization.

Knowledge:

After completing the course, the candidate will:

  • Have fundamental knowledge of key theories, concepts, principles, and methods in logistics
  • Have fundamental knowledge of organizational theory and the role of logistics within an organization
  • Have fundamental knowledge of the main elements of a logistics system
  • Be familiar with the history of logistics and the role of logistics engineers in society
  • Be familiar with how sustainability, digitalization, and new technology influence logistics

Skills:

After completing the course, the candidate will:

  • Be able to independently and critically apply key scientific principles and methods
  • Be able to choose appropriate methods for analyzing and developing logistics solutions
  • Be able to transform theories into practical application through well-founded choices of alternative solutions
  • Be able to use acquired knowledge to develop holistic and sustainable logistics solutions

General Competence:

After completing the course, the candidate will:

  • Understand the complexity of today’s logistics systems
  • Be able to plan and carry out project work and collaborate in teams
  • Be able to communicate and present logistics-related issues and solutions in a clear and structured manner, both in writing and orally
