About this course
Content
One-dimensional elements and computational procedures, theory of elasticity, principle of virtual displacements, two- and three-dimensional elements, variational principles (principle of stationary potential energy, strong form and weak form of a physical problem), isoparametric elements, applications of the finite element method to linear-elastic two- and three-dimensional structures.
Learning outcomes
The course gives the theoretical foundation of finite element methods (FEM) and skills in the use of FEM for stress analysis of linear elastic structures subjected to static loading conditions.
Teaching methods
Lectures and homework assignments (including analytical and computational problems). 2/3 of the homework assignments must be approved to take the final exam. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course.
