MECHANICS OF MATERIALS: Stress, strain and elasticity. Torsion of circular sections. Stresses in cylindrical and spherical vessels and pipes. Two- and three-dimensional states of stress. Yield criteria.

Learning outcomes

This basic course in mechanics provides basic knowledge of statics and strength of materials. T

TKT4126 Mechanics has the following objectives:

Knowledge

The candidate shows understanding for…

  • important mechanical quantities such as force and moment
  • the equilibrium equations
  • how forces and stresses work on and in statically determinate structures: beams, trusses, and frames
  • the basic relation between statics and mechanics of materials
  • the definition of stress and strain
  • basic linear elasticity theory
  • stress in idealized structures such as axial rods, pipes and rings subjected to typical loadings
  • plane stress- and strain conditions
  • the transformation of stresses and strains between different reference systems
  • yield criteria (Mises)

Skills

The candidate…

  • can calculate the forces in statically determinate structures
  • can calculate, sketch, and interpret a load-diagram (M-,V- and N-diagram)
  • can calculate stresses and strains of idealized structures subjected to typical loading
  • can calculate shear stresses and strains due to torsion of circular sections
  • can transform stresses and strains, including determining the principal stresses
  • can evaluate the risk of failure

General competence

The candidate…

  • can explain the basic principles of statics and mechanics of materials
  • shows good understanding of the relationship between the basic theory and the practical applications of mechanics
  • shows understanding of basic issues within statics and mechanics of materials, and of how these can be solved by using simplified mathematical models of the construction
  • can, by physical insight, analyze and solve statics and mechanics of materials problems by hand and with Python, within the framework of the syllabus of the course

Digital competence

The candidate can use Python as a tool in analysis of mechanics problems: Simple calculations, plotting curves, reading data from file, numerical integration, regression.

Sustainability competence

  • The student can perform fundamental calculations that are required to realize a safe, economic and sustainable structure.
  • The student comprehends and has knowledge about the importance of material selection and sustainable exploitation of various materials in a structure.

Teaching methods

Lectures, assignments, computer exercises with Python, laboratory exercise.

2/3 of the assignments, and approx. 2/3 of the computer exercises with Python must be approved prior to the examination. The laboratory exercise is compulsory.
