About this course

Content

The topic consists of a theoretical part (3F+3S) and a term paper (4S). The theoretical part covers current status of nuclear energy, fabrication and enrichment of nuclear fuel, reactor technology including PWR, BRW and HWR and future reactor concepts, recycling of spent fuel, principles and storage of waste, nuclear safety, nuclear weapons and non-prolification issues.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students should:
- Have general knowledge about nuclear energy, including market penetration, economy, resources, etc.
- Know the key nuclear parameters and processes relevant for nuclear power.
- Have knowledge about the most important components in a nuclear energy system including fuel fabrication, reactors, recycling and storage of nuclear waste.
- Have knowledge about future reactor concepts.
- Have knowledge about nuclear weapons and non-proliferation issues.
- Make the connection between nuclear power and process technology, materials technology, etc. and be able to use own competence within nuclear power.
- Be able to evaluate nuclear energy in relation to other types of power production.
- Be able to analyze and be critical to various technical and scientific sources of information and use these sources to structure and formulate scientifically reasoning.

Teaching methods

Lectures and project work. The project work (term paper) count 20 % of the final grade. The term paper includes both a written report as well as an oral presentation in class. At postponed exams written exam can be substituted with oral exam.
