Paper and Fiber Technology

The pulp and paper industry. Raw materials for pulp and paper (wood, noon-woods and recovered paper). Chemical and physical structure of fibers. Basic fiber physics. Production processes and properties of paper pulps, both fresh and recycled. Unit operations in pulping and papermaking. Environmental consequences of pulping and papermaking.

The course gives a basic introduction to the manufacture of paper, including the chemical and physical basis for pulping and papermaking, properties of paper related to the production processes and environmental consequences of papermaking.

Lectures and compulsory laboratory excercises. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.
