About this course
Content
Genetic engineering / molecular biology / DNA fingerprinting (DNA analyzes, methods), mutations and gene regulation.
Protein Assays.
Fermentation technology (principles, equipment and conditions, different processes).
Plant biotechnology (artificial propagation of plants, different cell cultures).
Biocatalysis / biotransformation (including immobilization of cells and enzymes).
Knowing ethical consequences when using / choosing biotechnological methods.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student has basic knowledge of recombinant DNA technology.
The student has basic knowledge of fermentation technology (industrial biotechnology).
The student is familiar with basic principles of biocatalysis and biotransformation (including immobilization).
The student is acquainted with plant biotechnology.
The student is acquainted with various experimental techniques in biotechnology.
Skills
The student can isolate DNA and proteins from bacterial cells.
The student can separate both DNA fragments and proteins using. electrophoresis, and can detect the gels using different color techniques.
The student can concentrate DNA fragments using PCR.
The student can determine protein concentrations in a bacterial sample using protein assays.
The student can perform an immobilization method for enzymes.
The student can evaluate and disseminate results from laboratory tests in writing, both in Norwegian and English.
Teaching methods
Lectures, theory exercises and laboratory work with mandatory presence. Lectures: 90 hours, Laboratory exercises: 40 hours, Own effort: 160 hours
