About this course
Content
Quantum mechanics applied to simple systems. The hydrogen atom and atomic orbitals. Symmetry in molecules and elementary group theory. The Pauli principle and electron spin. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Molecular orbital theory. Electronic transitions. Chemical reactions. Rotational and vibrational motions in molecules. Magnetic resonans spectroscopy.
Learning outcomes
The intension is to give an elementary introduction to the modern description of the chemical bond. Especially emphasis on molecular structure, spectroscopic properties and chemical reactivity.
Teaching methods
Lectures. Written excercises and computer excercises. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.
