About this course

Content

A broad introduction to modern synthetic organic chemistry; Transformation of functional groups by substitution reactions, protecting groups, electrophilic addition to C-C double and triple bonds, hydroboration, reactions with organoboranes, reduction of carbonyl, C-C double and triple bonds, hydrogenation, hydride reactions, preparation and reactions with organometallic compounds (Mg, Li), reactions involving transition metals (organo-Cu, -Pd, -Ru), C-C bond formation reactions from organoboron and organotin compounds, oxidation reactions (alcohols, C=C bonds).

Learning outcomes

The course covers the theoretical basis for the chemical reactions that are important in the synthesis of organic compounds, particularly organometallic chemistry, including transition metals, C-C bond formation of organoboranes and -stannanes, carbene chemistry, aromatic substitutions and oxidations. By solving assigned problems, the students will learn to design multi step synthesis.
After the course the students are supposed to be able to:
- plan syntheses of organic molecules by proper choice of starting materials, reagents and reaction conditions,
- predict competing reactions afromd potential by-products,
- know how functional groups do affect the electron density, the properties and, in particular, the reactivity of organic compounds,
- show reaction mechanisms for the reactions,
- plan simple synthetic routes based on retrosynthetic synthesis strategy.

Teaching methods

If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
