About this course

Content

The course includes basic parts of quantitative mineralogy, including mineral stability calculations in Perplex, crystallographic calculations in Excel and Matlab and mineral chemical calculations and plotting in Excel and Matlab. The exercises will use data from different methods, such as microprobe (mineral chemistry), XRF (rock chemistry), EBSD (mineral orientation) and optical microscope.

Learning outcomes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Students should be able to interpret and use mineralogical data both from a crystallographic and crystal chemical perspective and gain an insight relationship between geological processes and crystallographic and mineral chemical observations.

KNOWLEDGE: Upon completion and passing the course, the candidate should have thorough knowledge at a high level on selected aspects of quantitative mineralogy and their significance for minerals and rock mass properties, distribution and use.

SKILLS: After completing and passing the course, students should be able to apply new and established theory quantitatively within mineralogy.

GENERAL COMPETENCE: The candidate should be able to use mineralogy quantitatively with crystallographic, mathematical and thermodynamic tools and have a good understanding of the interpretation and limitations of the results obtained.

Teaching methods

Teaching will be conducted in tutorials including the presentations and discussions, as well as common calculation exercises. Featured topics will be presented in a written submissions and documented calculations, which are subject to approval. The course is evaluated by a reference group, or by all the students if they are few.
