About this course
Content
The course is part of the specialization Technical Resource Geology and Mineral Production within the study programme Geotechnology, and provides a specialization in Mining Engineering. It builds on the basic courses TGB4227 Mineral Production, Basic Course or TGB4242 Mining Methods, Basic Course. The course focuses on feasibility studies, mine planning, layout and design, cost estimation and profitability analysis. The student will be introduced to modern mine planning tools.
Learning outcomes
Competence:
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze how different planning solutions affect resource utilization, environmental impact, production capacity, and cost. (Analyzing, Evaluating)
- Integrate technical, economic, and sustainability criteria into mine planning and design processes. (Creating)
- Reflect critically on the use of modern mine planning tools in decision-making and design. (Evaluating)
Knowledge and skills:
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Describe modern methods and tools for mine design & planning.
- Explain the required inputs and design criteria for mine planning processes.
- Design layouts for underground and surface mines.
- Develop production plans across different planning horizons (e.g., life-of-mine to weekly schedules).
- Use modern planning tools to support mine design and scheduling.
Teaching methods
Lectures, obligatory exercises and obligatory excursion (might be organized during weekend). Excursion may be scheduled for a weekend. The use of student reference groups for course evaluation is made dependent on the number of students. All students take part in the course evaluation if there are fewer than three students.
