Mining Engineering

The main focus will be on methods and equipment used for the exploitation of all types of solid mineral resources both open pit and underground. The course will also encompass pre-production and post-production activities related to mining projects. Additional topics will be economy, OHS (occupational health and safety), quality assurance and public rules and regulations. Software for production planning and techniques for production optimization will be presented.

The course will give en overview of industrial exploitation of solid mineral resources based on a securely social and business administrational management of non-renewable natural resources.

Knowledge:
Knowledge in different mining methods and their pros and cons on the surface and under ground, how to open up a underground deposit and how drilling, charging and blasting influence loading, haulage and crushing. The student should also gain insight into problems related to mineral economics, mining legislation, environmental issues and Health, Environment and Safety (HES).

Skills:
Given the geological model the student should be capable of assessing suitable mining methods, do initial economic assessments and do rough assessments of challenges related to the environment, legislation and HES.

Optional field work. Exercises. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. Lectures are held in English if international master students attend.
