Processing of Primary and Secondary Raw Materials, Basic Course

The course shall give the student an ability to work with production of inorganic raw materials for metallurgical and chemical industry as well as for civil engineering. Traditionally the source of the raw materials have been primary recourses (ore and mineral desposits), but the importance of secondary raw materials like scrap and other types of waste is increasing. The subject is divided into three parts: Particulate technology which gives knowledge of matters like particle size and shape, the behaviour of particles in fluids, comminution, sampling and transport. Separation processes relating to differences in particle size, surface properties, magnetic properties, optical properties, electric properties and specific weigth. Processing in practice. The aim is to give an understanding of how unit operations are tied together to produce raw materials for other industries from the various fields available. A number of examples are given from existing processes.

The couse is intended to give students a background to lead the production of inorganic raw materials for metallurgical and chemical processes and the construction industry.

Knowledge:
The students must have knowledge af the most common unit processes, the physics and chemistry behind as well as the equipment that is used. The link between the properties of the feed material and the choice of processing solutions is an importenat element.

Skills:
The studensts should be able to suggest simple flowsheets for processing of different ores, as well as to calculate and analyse separation results, simple mass balances and capacity aspects of communition equipment and classifiers.

Lectures. Laboratory exercises. Excursion. The exam can be changed from written to oral at the postponed exams (continuation exam).
