Content
Factors that influence the internal and external environment. Occupational health and safety (OHS) in mineral production and recovery, rock construction, smelters and in other heavy industry. Topics that the course will teach is legislation and roles, management systems, ventilation, accidents, explosion and fire prevention, noise, vibration, radiation, dust, chemicals and risk assessment.
Learning outcomes
The course shall give the students basic knowledge and understanding with focus on Health, Environment and Safety (HES) in mineral production and recovery, rock construction, smelters and in other heavy industry.
Knowledge: The students shall be able to give an account for the HES conception, common challenges with respect to HES activities within mineral production and recovery, rock constructions, smelters and other heavy industry. They shall also possess knowledge related to framework conditions (HES related) management systems and legislation. The students shall be able to identify different exposure factors like noise, vibration, radiation, dust and chemicals and perform risk assessment of these. They shall know sampling procedures for the different exposure factors related to work environment, and for noise and dust related to outdoor environment. The students shall know the principles for ventilation and other measures to reduce exposure.
Skills: The students shall be able to propose mapping, perform mapping and make estimates of factor influence upon outdoor environment and work environment based on such mapping. They shall also be able to estimate indicator levels that characterizes the HES situation within an enterprise. Furthermore the students shall be able to perform risk assessments and propose control measures to reduce the risk of accidents, injuries and occupational illnesses. The students shall be able to use relevant digital tools.
General competence: The students shall be able to cooperate and solve problems in a multidisciplinary context. They shall also be able to present their work orally and in written form.
Teaching methods
Lectures, fieldwork, exercises and project. Exercises and project with a written or oral report are compulsory and must be approved to attend the exam. Excursion is part of the course. The course may be taught intensively. The course is evaluated by a reference group.
