About this course
Content
An overview of the basic subjects within mineral resource management, including mine surveying, mine geology, evaluation of mineral deposits, mine design and mine planning. Preparation of thematic maps and models connected to the responsible management of mineral resources for a sustainable development. A introduction to the CAD tool Microstation and the GIS-tool ArcGIS is given.

Competencies
After completing the course, the student should be able to
- Describe the fundamental pillars of mineral resource management; mine surveying, mine geology, mine evaluation, mine design, and mine planning.
- Determine spatial variations in geological deposits and relate these to the five pillars of mineral resource management.
- Describe the link between thematic maps, 3D geological models, and the responsible management of mineral resources for sustainable development.
Knowledge and Skills
After completing the course, the student should be able to
- Georeference / position observations relevant to mineral extraction (e.g., geological or environmental data) using various techniques and equipment.
- Describe and compare the uncertainty profile of different positioning methods.
- Apply estimation methods to estimate the value at unsampled locations based on geodata.
- Classify IT systems such as MicroStation and ArcGIS and describe their applications.
- Create thematic maps to communicate aspects related to mineral resource management.
- Outline aspects of the management process from discovery to extraction of mineral raw materials and discuss potential conflicts between the developer and society.
Teaching methods
The compulsory field course will be organized in week 34. There will be a few days in Trondheim followed by some days in Røros. Information will be posted in Canvas before the beginning of the semester. Lectures and activities throughout the semester.
80% of the activities throughout the semester must be approved to get access to the exam.
The course is evaluated by a reference group or a questionnaire.
