About this course

Content

Formation of sedimentary basins in different tectonic environments; mechanisms for basin formation and parameters that control subsidence, sedimentary architecture and burial history.

Learning outcomes

The students shall be able to evaluate the distribution of deposits in a sedimentary basin in the context of tectonic environment and in the light of fundamental processes such as extension of the lithosphere, differential subsidence and syn- to post-tectonic sedimentation. The students should be able to analyze the stacking of sedimentary units in terms of tectonics or sea-level change and link tectonic geomorphology to depositional patterns in fault-controlled basins. This will enable the student to employ knowledge of geological processes in an applied context, such as the evaluation of basins for exploration and production of hydrocarbons, CO2 storage and mineral placer deposits.

Teaching methods

Lectures, compulsory exercises. Student's evaluation of the course via questionnaire.
