Ore-Deposit Genesis

The course is based on self-studies and weekly discussions of journal articles and text book material on selected ore- and mineral-deposits relevant for ongoing research efforts at the department.

Imagine that you are challenged to evaluate the potential for shear zone hosted precious metal deposits on the Fosen peninsula, or Cu-Ni deposits in the Seiland Igneous Province, or something completely different.

Knowledge: The student learns how to acquire in-depth information on a topic and will learn the critical reading of journal articles. The student will gain insight into prospecting techniques, formation, and appearance of selected economic mineral deposits.

Skills and general competence:

The student will obtain insight in:

• Strategies for developing and implementing an ore-geological project.
• How and where to gather basic geological data and how to write a sober report that communicates the required information for investors, clients, and other decision-makers that eventually may sponsor the project.

Lectures/colloquia (by the students), self-studies, and discussions about once a week where the topic will be the field area and the relevant ore-deposit types. Lectures are held in English if required. Mandatory fieldwork for a 7-10 days duration in a relevant area is an imperative part of the course. Currently, we are studying Sn-Cu-W deposits in Cornwall, UK, and granitic pegmatite deposits in S-Norway. Fieldwork includes a weekend. After fieldwork, the students are required to write a report comprising 5000 words (group work). The course is evaluated by a reference group.
