About this course

Content

Electrostatics. Method of images, separation of variables, Green functions. Multipole expansions. Electric fields in matter. Magnetostatics. Magnetic fields in matter. Electromotive force, electromagnetic induction. Maxwell's equations. Conservation laws for charge, energy, momentum and angular momentum. Electromagnetic waves. Potentials and fields, gauge transformations. Radiation from dipoles and charges in motion. Theory of relativity.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

The candidate has knowledge beyond an introductory level about:

  • electromagnetic phenomena in vacuum and materials
  • mathematical methods for analyzing such phenomena.

The candidate knows the concept of conservation laws in electromagnetism.

Skills:

The candidate should be able to solve problems in electromagnetism by applying appropriate mathematical tools and methods, including:

  • vector calculus beyond an introductory level
  • the method of images, separation of variables, and Green functions.

The candidate should be able to write code to solve electromagnetic problems numerically.

General competence:

The candidate should get training in writing a scientific report.

Teaching methods

Lectures and problem solving. Compulsory programming project with written report. Expected workload in the course is 225 hours.
