Crediting practice

This is an elective course with restricted access. The purpose of the course is to facilitate the student to gain experience in applying their professional competence in collaboration with colleagues in a company, and thereby expand their perspective on their own professional knowledge. In addition, the student will gain experience about work tasks and professional practice for an MSc in technology, and how practical issues are dealt with in work situations.

Topics to be covered during the internship include:

• Project planning, practice plan, progress plan
• Problem analysis and limitation
• Progress reports / status analyzes
• Documentation / final report

Crediting practice shall be an independent work carried out at a technology company / enterprise, research institution (outside university / college) or within public sector, relevant to the study program.

Minimum 2 students at each company. The duration of the internship must be at least 135 hours. Work with submissions to NTNU comes in addition.

A student in the course should:

• prepare a practice plan at the beginning of the course.
• keep a log of attendance and work performed.
• do all the given learning activities and submit these as required.
• write and submit at internship report / final report as specified in the internship plan.

Both the company and NTNU must provide a contact person / supervisor for the internship student. The internship is formally approved by signing an agreement between the company, NTNU and the student.

NTNU will work to develop agreements with relevant companies where students can complete the internship. Students can initiate contact with a company, with a view to an internship. In such cases, this must be approved by the course coordinator well in advance of the start of the internship. The student can not complete the internship in a company the student already has a connection to or employment relationship in. The internship qualifies for 7.5 credits. All practice in this subject shall be unpaid and the student cannot have a paid employment in the same company during the internship.

After completing the internship, the student should be able to

- contribute to the solution of engineering issues,

- be able to deepen knowledge and skills acquired in the study and use them in a practical context.

- reflect on how professional competence can be used in collaboration with colleagues in a company.

Knowledge and skills:

After completing the internship, the student should be able to

- document the project work in a correct way according to the current standard in the company or research.

- explain how work tasks or projects are managed.

- account for different working methods and production technical aids or research methods.

- explain how a technology company or business or public administration is organized or how a research project is carried out

- explain how health, environment and safety are taken care of in the relevant business.

- reflect on ethical issues that are relevant to the business in question.

Competence is acquired through

• active participation in work in a technology company / enterprise.
• learning activities e.g. reflection and presentations on seminars.
• work on developing the project report.
