About this course

Content

Application of electrical power in marine installations for production of oil&gas and subsea oil&gas process installations. Power generation, dynamic models of rotating machines, short circuit analysis, start-up of large motors, cable modelling and subsea cable networks. Subsea motors and subsea high voltage equipment. Electrical heating of subsea pipelines.Offshore power grid.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:
After completing the course, the student shall:
- have an overview of utilization and application of electric power in offshore installations both on the suface and the seabed.
- know dynamic modelling of rotating machnines.
- know methods for short circuit calculations and determination of short circuit ratio.
- have an understanding of problems related to large machines in weak power grids.
- know modelling of power cables for subsea transmission grids.
- have an understanding of the design and construction of high voltage components for installations on the seabed.
- know how electric power is being used for heating of pipelines.

Skills:
After completing the course, the student shall be able to design, construct and analyze marine power systems, with focus on power systems in installations for oil and gas production, installations on the seabed for processing of oil and gas and offshore power grids for transmission of electrical energy. The student shall be able to use modern power system analysis software for these tasks.

General competence:
After completing the course, the candidate has increased:
- skills in cooperation and interdisciplinary collaboration
- ability to communicate effectively to professionals and non-specialists alike through reports and presentations
- ability to contribute to innovation and innovation processes

Teaching methods

Lectures and compulsory exercises. Some exercises use Matlab/Python for calculations and analysis. 25% of the course is project-based using relevant simulation software ((DigSILENT Power Factory) for analysis and design of marine power systems.
The course is given in English.
