About this course
Content
The course gives a comprehensive introduction to the technologies that are employed in switching equipment, power cables and power transformers. The switching equipment sections cover switching over-voltages, the electric arc, arcing media (SF6 and SF6 - alternatives, vacuum, air, oil), breaker designs, fuses, as well as gas insulated and air insulated substations. The cable part describes various designs and technologies used for underground and subsea cables, mechanical- and electrical stress, power rating evaluations and cable termination and splicing. The transformer section covers the electric insulation system, stresses during transient over-voltages, thermal aspects, protection, winding connections, and standards for transformer testing.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge: After having completed the course the candidate should have advanced knowledge regarding: - design, working principles and operation of switching equipment, power cables and power transformers - material usage in switching equipment, power cables and power transformers - the electrical, mechanical and thermal stresses that switching equipment, power cables and power transformers are exposed to. Skills: After having completed the course the candidate shall be able to: - participate in planning and specification of substations, transformer stations and cable installations in high voltage grids - perform dimensioning calculations for substations, transformer stations and cable installations - be able to use selected simulation tools for calculation of either thermal, mechanical or electric stress. - participate in design and development work on switchgear, cables and transformers - do marketing and sale of switching equipment, power cables and transformers. General competence: After completing the course, the candidate has increased: - ability to contribute to innovation and innovation processes
Teaching methods
