About this course
Content
Properties of different insulation systems based on: gas, solids and liquid/paper. Mechanisms of electrical conduction, polarisation, dielectric loss and breakdown. Ageing mechanisms (partial discharges, thermal degradation,water treeing, etc.) and methods for condition assessment including environmental aspects.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to give a thorough introduction to properties needed of different insulating materials used for design of High Voltage apparatus. Knowledge: After completing this course the candidate shall: - have in-depth knowledge about the terms regarding determining dimensions of high voltage power apparatus. - be able to give an account of the basic breakdown mechanisms of gasses, oils and solid insulating materials. - be able to give an account of relevant factors determining permittivity and dielectric loss values. - know the structure and characteristic properties of insulation systems based upon different polymers, glass, ceramics, oils and gasses. - be able to give an account of the gradual degradation mechanisms caused by partial discharges, water trees and electrical trees. Skills: After completing this course the candidate have obtained advanced knowledge within the science of High Voltage insulation and specialized material knowledge to be able to: - design insulation systems for simplified high voltage power apparatus. - be able to use digital simulation tools for electric field stress at AC and DC voltages. - to use instruments and equipment in high voltage laboratories. General competence: After completing the course, the candidate has increased: - skills in cooperation and interdisciplinary collaboration - ability to communicate effectively to professionals and non-specialists alike through reports and presentations - ability to contribute to innovation and innovation processes
Teaching methods
Lectures and laboratory exercises.
The laboratory exercises cover the topics: -
- Measurement of dielectric loss and detection of partial discharges in cable terminations
- Electric breakdown strength of airgaps exposed to typical stresses.
