About this course

Content

The topic will be closely linked to the ongoing research activities like:

- Industrial heating and refrigeration processes in all parts of society.

- Processing, transport and utilization of natural gas and hydrogen. Multi phase flow. Thermal power production. gas-fired power plants, fuel cells. Safety, environment, economy and management.

- Combustion processes, industrial burners, boilers and gas turbines, emissions of polluted materials from combustion. Exhaust cleaning. Safety regarding fire and explosion.

- Turbines for water and wind power. Transport of liquid and gas in pipe systems. Pumps and compressors. Aerodynamics of buildings, transport vessels and sports. Hydraulics, hydraulic control systems for control of various machinery.

- Energy and Indoor Environment. District heating and other hydronic processes. Energy conservation and energy monitoring. Solar heat utilization.

- Components, processes and plants regarding refrigeration and food processing. Cooling/freezing, dewatering/drying, heat pumps and environmentally secure working fluids.

Design, construction and commissioning will be handled using detailed mathematical models and software for numerical simulation and experiments.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

Knowledge related to one of the following topics;

- Thermal energy:

Combustion, bioenergy, thermal Turbo Machinery, thermal power Cycles including CO2 capture, high-temperature fuel cells, value-chains and life cycle analysis (LCA)

- Industrial process technology:

Systems and components for the process industry, energy analysis, process integration, refrigeration technology, heat pump technology, multiphase flow technology, gas transport, natural gas processing, low temperature process technology, dewatering and drying, cooling, freezing and defrosting, and fluidized systems.

- Fluids engineering:

Hydraulic turbo machines, fluid power and pneumatic, aero- and gas dynamics, multiphase flows, micro-fluid dynamics, numerical flow calculations, fluid mechanics, and turbulence physics

- Energy and indoor environments:

Heating and energy systems, energy consumption and energy use planning, waterborne heating, heating from central heating-plants, system simulation, central operational control, administration - operation – maintenance and development (FDVU), indoor environment, sanitation and residential hygiene, applied heat pump engineering, climate systems, industrial ventilation, fire and safety

Skills:

Skills related to;

- Detailed evaluation and analysis of required components and unit operations in thermal energy and process systems.

- Ability to perform methodology-based scientific and technical analysis.

General competence:

Knowledge of thermal energy systems and components. Analyzing scientific and technical problems related to design and operation of thermal components and systems.

Teaching methods

The specialization course consists of two modules of 3,75 credits each. Only students writing Project have Access to specialization course, the choice of modules should be discussed with your supervisor. The teaching of the modules may be given as lectures, exercises, seminars or guided self-tuition. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If the teaching is given in English the Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
