About this course
Content
The topic will focus on analyses, design and operation of sustainable thermal components and systems. Of importance is development and implementation of new technology for thermal processes. Topics related to safety, economy, environment, operation, maintenance and legislation are included. National and international challenges related to sustainable energy conservation and utilization is highlighted. The topic will be closely linked to the ongoing research activities. A detailed description of relevant topics is given at the Energy and Process department web pages, Process and Power group. Topics should be chosen in order to support the project work performed in TEP4515.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge: Knowledge related to one or several topics; - operation, maintenance and legislation - national and international challenges related to sustainable energy conservation and utilization - thermal heat and power production including CO2 capture - gas turbines and compressors, heat and mass transfer - biomass and waste, air pollution and gas cleaning equipment - energy utilization in the industry - environmental system analysis (Life Cycle Assessment Skills: Skills related to; - Analyses, construction and operation of thermal systems and components - National and global challenges related to sustainable energy conservation and utilization, including reduction in emissions - Detailed evaluation and analysis of thermal energy and process plants, including gas turbine power generation. - Perform scientific and technical analysis of specific topics. - Ability to conduct large project, establish project plans and write project reports according to current standards. General competence: Knowledge of thermal energy systems and components. Analyzing scientific and technical problems related to design and operation of thermal components and systems.
Teaching methods
The course consists of two themes at 3.75 ECTS credits each, or one at 7.5 ETC. Only students writing Project have access to specialization courses. Choice of themes is to be performed in consultation with the supervisor of the specialization project. Themes should normally be chosen among the themes offered by the Department of Energy and Process Engineering.The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If the teaching is given in English the Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. NOTE! No lectures are given in the subject TEP4515. ALL lecturing is given in the selected theme(s). The course is not available for exchange students.
