Multiphase Transport

The content is divided in two types: multiphase flows in pipes (flow phenomena and principles for flow models) and fluid related effects (Flow Assurance). Key words are: Flow regimes and transitions between regimes (slug/bubble flow, stratified/annular flow), oil-water flow, oil-water-gas flow, steady state and transient flow models, unsteady flow (terrain slugging), gas hydrates, waxes, water management, flow simulators.

An aim of the course is to give the background knowledge needed for using existing flow simulators for multiphase pipelines.

Knowledge: The course provides the student with knowledge about: Multiphase flow in pipes: flow regimes, pressure drop, liquid accumulation, unstable flows, gas hydrates, separation, wax and scale deposits, computational methods for steady state and dynamic multiphase flows in pipes.

The course gives the student insight about: General challenges related to multiphase transport of reservoir fluids from wells to process, methods and uncertainties in design tools. Skills: The course should enable the student to: Apply computational methods for multiphase pipe flows, evaluate possibilities for hydrate formation and evaluate methods for plug removal, evaluate the possibilities for unstable flows.

General competence: When the student has finished the course, he/she shall have knowledge about flow assurance issues in multiphase flow lines and the basis for flow simulators (models and numerics). The student will be able to use this knowledge in analysis of design and operational aspects of multiphase pipeline systems.

A main objective of the course is to provide the basis for students to make use of dynamic flow simulators.

Lectures. The course is given by lectures, including invited contributions from experts in industry on the flow assurance parts. Flow simulators. Suppliers of dynamic multiphase pipeline simulators are invited to give introductions and demonstrations. Flow simulators will be used in excercises.

The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If the teaching is given in English the Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
