About this course

Content

Basics on wind turbine technology and calculation of energy potential in wind. The course is built such that the students work in groups to design a wind turbine model, consisting of both blades (Aerodynamics) and a generator (Electrotechnical). In addition to the design, the model is produced and tested.

Learning outcomes

The course provides the student with knowledge about: - Energy potential in the wind. - The flow characteristics and turbulence in the wind. - Wind turbines' basic design and introduction to the main components. - Aerodynamics of an airfoil. - Wind turbines; power- and thrust coefficients according to Betz theorem. - Actuator and Rotary Disc theory. - Design of a turbine blade by using the Blade Element Momentum method. - Basics on electrical engineering and electromagnetism. - Basic on electrical machines. - Theory and design of permanent magnet generators. - When the student has finished the course, he/she shall have knowledge about Wind turbines and their analysis. - Numerical calculation and visualisation using appropriate software introduced in the course.- In addition, the course will provide students with the opportunity to work collaboratively in groups during the course project.

Teaching methods

Classroom lectures and digital lectures. Exercises and laboratory work. 2/3 of the exercises are required approved for admission to the examination. Assignments, Report and oral presentation will be separately evaluated. The lectures and exercises are in English.

The courses TEP4175 and FENT2321 share both lectures and activities.
