About this course

Content

Fundamentals of flames and chemical reactions: thermodynamics, experimental investigations. Chemical kinetics, reaction mechanisms, laminar premixed and non-premixed flames. Turbulence and combustion; turbulence modelling, turbulent combustion, "Eddy Dissipation Concept" (EDC). Pollution formation, NOx, soot. Combustion of solid and liquid fuels. Reaction kinetics.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The student gets knowledge about: - fuels and combustion devices. - the physical and chemical basis. - pollution. - safety (fire etc.). The student gets insight into: - chemical kinetics, chemical mechanisms, simplified and detailed reactions. - laminar flames; qualitative and quantitative fuel conversion, temperature, products etc. - the influence of turbulence on heat exchange, mixing and combustion, and how this is expressed mathematically. - turbulence theory and modeling, the most popular turbulence models boundary layers; solid surfaces in the flow. - flame regimes, small and large scales (time, length) and their influence - combustion models for computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Skills: The student should be able to: - understand how combustion devices work and how simplified or detailed calculations can be made for these. - select models (turbulence, combustion, chemistry) for use with CFD - work on a wide spectrum of combustion cases. - transfer knowledge between different kinds of combustion cases. General competence: The student should have an understanding for: - that fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer and chemistry is generic knowledge. - how to use the theory to solve new problems. - how combustion works and how it can be changed, e.g., to reduce pollution and increase energy utilization.

Teaching methods

Lectures, self study, assignments. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If the teaching is given in English the Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
