About this course

Content

Constraints and generalized coordinates. Virtual displacements, Lagange's equations. Variational calculus, Hamilton's principle. Lagrangian for particle in electromagnetic field (for Physics students). Constants of motion, symmetry properties. Virial theorem. Central forces, scattering. Elements of the kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies. Special relativity (for Physics). Normal coordinates. Hamilton's equations. Canonical transformations. Order and chaos (for Technology students).

Learning outcomes

The subject gives an introduction to classical mechanics. This forms a basis for more advanced topics within physics and mechanics.

Teaching methods

Lectures and exercises. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
