About this course

Content

1. Basis for surface modeling
2. Sketching curves in 2D using Splines
3. Creating form on surfaces, edit surfaces
4. Secondary shape tools for surfaces
5. Evaluate geometry
6. Master modeling
7. Modelling from digitized data
8. Methods for rapid manufacturing of models and tools from 3D-models

Learning outcomes

The students shall:
- Have knowledge of methods and techniques to design NURBS-curves and complex surfaces
- Know methods of evaluation of shape
- Know techniques for digitizing and 3D-printing

Skills
- Be able to use 3D-tools to build complex surface models
- Be able to use hybrid modeling with solid- and surface models
- Be able to create models that can be produced in plastic and metal
- Have skills in digitalization of physical models
- Be able to designing photorealistic scenes

General knowledge:
- Be able to describe methods and justify choices in the form of written reports

Supplementary information:
- The course requires that the software SolidWorks 2017 is used for exercises and assignments (free student version available).
- NTNU has limited availability on PCs, so use of own laptop is required (the machine must be suitable for CAD).

Compulsory Requirements:
- There will be up to 3 compulsory seminar days according to plan distributed at the beginning of the semester.
- 2 major assignments must be delivered according to plan and approved in order to take the final assignment.
- Compulsory laboratory work may be part of the assignments.
