About this course

Content

Idea development and basic design methodology

  • Freehand drawing and sketching as a method for idea generation and visualized thought process.
  • Methodology related to idea generation and dissemination of process; from brainstorming to processed sketch or presentation drawing.
  • Basic model building as a method for generating ideas and developing form.

Visualization and drawing techniques

  • Theory and exercises in sketching and freehand drawing.
  • Introduction to perspective drawing, analytical freehand drawing of three-dimensional shapes.
  • Introduction to 2D and 3D digital conceptual techniques and software for visualizing products.
  • Introduction to digital images from 3D models and photography of physical models.
  • Introduction to basic model building based on own sketches and drawings.
  • Characterization of objects through various sketching techniques.
  • Drawing as a method in the analysis of the structure of the objects.
  • Differentiation between idea sketches, concept sketches, presentation drawings and digital renderings.
  • Terminology related to the description and evaluation of one's own and others' work.

Visualization with color

  • Theory and exercises in color with an emphasis on color relationships and color systematics, based on basic color theory.
  • Color as a physical, physiological and chemical phenomenon.
  • Color as a tool in product semantics; interaction between color and function, color symbolism and color as a signal.
  • The inherent expressive possibilities and function of color and surfaces.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

The student

  • has insight into various creative methods for idea development and innovation
  • has knowledge of basic drawing methods for visualizing three-dimensional objects
  • has knowledge of the use of digital tools for visualizing an object
  • can categorize the various drawing methods such as sketching, perspective drawing, axonometric drawing, projection, presentation drawinghas knowledge of basic themes, theories, issues, processes, tools and methods within the subject area
  • can update their knowledge within the subject area.has a conscious relationship with colors as a physical, physiological and chemical phenomenon.have an understanding of how we see and how we experience colours
  • has knowledge of basic color theory and familiarity with color systems

Skills:

The student

  • can choose and apply creative methods for developing and refining ideas and concepts.can use analytical freehand drawing as a tool in observation, analysis and reproduction of three-dimensional forms
  • has skills in freehand drawing and sketching techniques which involve knowledge of various digital and analogue drawing tools and drawing techniques
  • can use specialist terminology in communicating own work, and in evaluating the work of others.can justify the choice of colors based on theory and experience-based knowledge and put this in context with product semantics
  • can use colors to emphasize and support an idea in a design process.can evaluate and discuss the meaning of color for a product, and transfer this insight to product semantics
  • can apply professional knowledge and theory to practical issues and make reasoned choices based on reflection and an objective approach

General competence:

The student

  • can convey central subject matter such as theories, problems and solutions both in writing, orally and through relevant visual forms of expression
  • can exchange views and experiences with others with a background in the subject area and through this contribute to the development of good practice.knows basic methods within new thinking and innovation
  • can find, assess and refer to information and subject matter and present this in such a way that it illuminates a problem in an objective way

Teaching methods

Lectures, individual exercises under guidance, group assignments, oral reviews, written and visual submissions.
