Signed Language Linguistics

TEGN2012 is based on TEGN1102, TEGN1106, TEGN2000 and TEGN2011 and introduces basic concepts in linguistics, focusing on signed languages. Students will get an overview of the phonology, morphology and syntax of signed languages, and we will discuss different sign types in the vocabularies of signed languages. Students will learn to identify and describe different characteristics of Norwegian Sign Language, using the correct linguistic terminology, by e.g. using different annotation tools on (video recorded) Norwegian Sign Language discourse. Students will continue to develop their abilities toread and write academic texts.

Candidates

• Know the basic concepts used in signed language linguistics
• Have a basic knowledge of central aspects of the structure of Norwegian Sign Language
• Can identify and describe different traits of signed languages using the correct linguistic terminology
• Can use annotation tools
• Can present their own analysis in a simple academic text

• Lectures, group discussions and class discussions, project including practical exercises in analysis and annotation.
• 80% compulsory attendance.
• Approved obligatory assignments are valid for three semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following two semesters). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.
