Language and communication 2, including practicum

This course builds on language - multimodal communication, language and communication 1, and Norwegian sign language 1 and 2. We expand and deepen our knowledge of text and activity types, style and register in Norwegian and Norwegian sign language. Students will analyze and compare these elements in both languages. Emphasis is placed on developing vocabulary and language skills in Norwegian. Students will be introduced to different ways in which deaf/deafblind/deafened people use their linguistic resources, both in teaching and in practice. Students will also be introduced to guiding techniques and haptic communication. In preparation for practical training, students must sign a confidentiality agreement.

Candidates

• Can describe linguistic and communicative resources used in different situations
• Can use discourse mapping at a basic level when working to extend their vocabulary and linguistic repertoire in new domains
• Has knowledge of Braille
• Can describe how deaf, deaf-blind and deafened people use and interact with different languages, and can describe communicative possibilities and challenges with regard to different degrees of combined sensory loss

• Lectures, groupdiscussions, exercises, develop own linguistic abilities and practicum.
• 80% compulsory attendance.
• Approved obligatory assignments are valid for three semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following two semesters). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

Practicum: TEGN2011 contains one week of obligatory observation practicum. This usually consists in the students visiting one to two different places during the week, where they can observe different types of communication in Norwegian Sign Language
