Language and communication in theory and practice 2

TEGN2003 builds on TEGN2001 and TEGN2000. Here we will continue working with the theme language and power, this time from a majority vs. minority perspective. We will study genre, style and register in Norwegian, and begin to look for equivalent expressions in Norwegian Sign Language. Basic differences between direct communication and interpreter mediated communication, in for example professional discourse, will be studied. Focus will be on developing students' linguistic repertoire and abilities in both Norwegian and Norwegian Sign Language. Teaching methods and activities from TEGN2001 and TEGN2000 will be used here, and in addition students will get an introduction to Braille.

Candidates

- have detailed knowledge of language and power from a minority vs. majority perspective

- have knowledge about the basic differences between direct communication and interpreter mediated communication

- can work independently in order to develop their linguistic repertoire and abilities in Norwegian Sign Language and Norwegian, expanding into new domains

- can present knowledge in different ways depending on the situation

- can analyze and find meaning in Norwegian Sign Language discourses

- have knowledge about and can read and write Braille at a beginner level

Lectures, group discussions, excercises, develop own linguistic abilities.

Compulsory assignments:

80% compulsory attendance. (Failure to comply with this can be compensated in accordance with instructions from the teacher.)

1. Presentation regarding development of linguistic repertoire and discourse types. 2. Discourse mapping of a Norwegian Sign Language Discourse. 3. Oral presentation related to language and power. 4. A small examination in reading and writing Braille.

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.
