Interpreting - professional and theoretical perspectives 1

TEGN2002 gives a basic introduction to what a profession is, and the laws and ethical guidelinas governing the interpreting profession. In preparation for coming periods of practicum students will discuss professional confidentiality in detail. In TEGN2002 students will begin to reflect on the importance of getting to know oneself through meeting others. We begin to look at the historical development of the interpreting profession, its distinctiveness and place in society as well as the relationship between interpreters, employers of interpreters and the deaf community as this is seen through for example "hearing privilege" and "allyship". TEGN2002 also gives an introduction to interpreting theory and to which interpreting techniques and methods are used in different situations.

Candidates

• Have basic knowledge of what it means to be a professional
• Have knowledge about and an understanding of interpreters' confidentiality and how the interpreter's work is linked to laws and ethical guide lines
• Have knowledge about how the right to interpreting services is described in laws
• Knows about the historical development of the interpreting profession, its distinctiveness and place in society
• Knows how interpreting theory has emerged

• Lectures, discussions, written assignments.
• 80% compulsory attendance.

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for three semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following two semesters). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester
