Signed language communities in society 2

The course builds on TEGN1101. Whereas TEGN1101 focuses mainly on Norwegian conditions, we now look at hard-of-hearing, deaf and deafblind people as transnational citizens of the world and how their global community is made visible through international organizations and cultural forms of expression. This course also highlights the variation and diversity among hard-of-hearing, deaf and deafblind people, and shows different minorities within the minority. In this course, we also take a closer look at social participation and power, the power of definition and positioning, the differences between hearing and deaf/deafblind people, and show how discrimination can occur in various forms, both consciously and unconsciously. The goal is to give students a comprehensive understanding of sustainability, where social justice is just as important a prerequisite as environmental considerations, and to strengthen their analytical skills and critical reflection in order to contribute to a transition that is both environmentally responsible and inclusive.

Candidates

• Have knowledge about variation in the deaf community
• Have knowledge of issuses of power, such as positioning and definition power
• Know about international organisations and cultural expressions
• Can describe the possibilities to take part in society on an equal footing for deaf, deaf blind and hearing people

• Lectures, group discussions and class discussions, oral presentations, small written assignments that will help with the home exam.
• Obligatory assignments lead up to and support the written academic text that constitutes the home exam.
• Approved obligatory assignments are valid for three semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following two semesters). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.
