Language as multimodal communication

TEGN1102 gives a basic introduction to how languages and languaging can be described as multimodal interaction, where different mechanisms contribute to create meaning. We will see that languages can be spoken languages and signed languages, and that some languages can be expressed both orally and in a written form. We will look at how differences in modality and forms of expression influence the conditions for communication. TEGN1102 also gives an introduction to basic linguistic concepts, and to how interaction and communication is adapted to differing human conditions on societal, group and individual levels. Students will learn to write an academic text, conduct a literature search and how to summarize the content of an academic text.

Candidates

• Have basic knowledge about communication as a scientific field
• Know about meaning creation in interaction in general, and in languages using different modalities
• Can account for the central differences between spoken and signed languages
• Can conduct a literature search and summarize the content of academic texts

• Lectures, group discussions, practice and literature search.
• Approved obligatory assignments are valid for three semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following two semesters). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.
