Teaching in and about Norwegian Sign Language

Knowledge about the learning situation for signing pupils is central, as well as work with the current curricula for the subject. The candidate will acquire various learning strategies, and start using learning resources including digital tools in order to use them in their own teaching later with the best possible didactic adjustments.

The candidate will develop their knowledge and understanding about what it takes to plan, implement and evaluate learning activities in and about Norwegian Sign Language. This should also be linked up to how a teacher can support pupils' basic knowledge in the subject, their multilingualism, and competencies in the subject.

The candidate

• Has knowledge about central documents and current curricula and other teaching related documents for Norwegian Sign Language in school, focusing on the age group they will teach
• Has basic knowledge in evaluating and using different learning strategies, teaching resources and digital tools in the subject Norwegian Sign Language for their own learning and to convey knowledge as a basis for pupils' learning
• Can convey basic knowledge about the subject Norwegian Sign Language to pupils and others
• Can critically reflect around possibilities to facilitate communication, for example by arranging meeting spaces for signing pupils from different schools and by using virtual classrooms, but also via interpreting
• Can maintain and develop their own linguistic and didactic competence and contribute to development and innovation in the field
• Can plan and implement teaching in Norwegian Sign Language on a basic level, focusing on the age group they will teach
• Can set up clear aims for their teaching and evaluate the pupils’ learning outcomes
• Can organize varied learning activities, also using digital resources, which convey knowledge about Norwegian Sign Language that promote linguistic exchange as well as pupils' basic skills and development in the subject

Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, group work and through the digital learning platform.

Obligatory activities:

• 80% compulsory attendance.
• 2 written plans for a teaching activity, where one is also presented in Norwegian Sign Language.

Obligatory assignments are evaluated as approved/not approved. Obligatory assignments must be approved before the student can take an exam.

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for three semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following two semesters). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.
