About this course

Content

Statics: Calculation of ultimate loads, loads due to temperature change and deformation. Beams on elastic ground. Matrix statics for plane (2D) structures. Introduction of two-dimensional theory of elastisity, walls, plates and axis-symmetric shells.
Design of concrete structures II:
Topics such as deformations, creep & shrinkage, cracks in concrete, stresses/strains and punching shear shall be discussed and studied in greater depth than in the previous course (Betong I or similar). Post-/pre-tensioning, strut & tie models, columns, flat slabs and introduction to conceptual design. NS-EN 1992-1-1 (EC2).

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:
In statics the student should have acquired knowledge to calculate section forces and control the stability for the most common structures.
In concrete design the student should have acquired knowledge about all presented aspects of structural cross-sectional design of concrete structures, for ultimate limit states (ULS) and service limit states (SLS), and to navigate efficiently in the relevant standards needed in the process.
Skills:
Students should conduct static analysis by hand in simple frame constructions and solve more complicated tasks by using computer tools.
Concrete: The students should be able to perform calculations, structural design of cross-sections, in accordance to EC2 for all common structural components of reinforced concrete structures.
Competence:
Statics:The student will understand the static behavior of common building constructions and calculate strength, stiffness and stability of those.
Concrete: The student will have good understandings of presented topics related to structural design of cross-sections, including static analysis, durability, ultimate limites, service limit states and detailing of reinforcement in concrete structures.

Teaching methods

Statikk: Assignments, computer/software based tools and lecturing.

Concrete: Oral presentations supported with smartboard, white board and a projector. Class examples, exercises and home assignments.

For both subjects it will be arranged excursion to a building cite.
