About this course

Content

Academic content:

Construction Engineering:
The course is part of the subject construction engineering and project management, and will largely be related to planning and construction of roads, tunnels and rock spaces, production of building materials in quarries and earth moving.
The participant will have general knowledge about heavy construction machines and equipment. Can use NS8141, NS3420 and process code 1, should be able to use project management programs (MS Project). Know the basics of pricing and writing a good offer.

Engineering Geology:
Understand the behavior of the rock masses when building in/over rocks. Have the knowledge about the methods used to determine rock material properties and rock masses. Finding the right place to locate rock caverns and road tunnels. Earth weakness zones and joints. Gouge materials (inside joints), water and tension in mountains. Topics also considered in the course are engineering geological investigations and tests, rock stresses, groundwater in rock masses, rock mass classification and design approach for underground openings, stability and rock support of underground openings and stability of rock slopes.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge
Construction Engineering:
The candidate will gain a general understanding of the construction industry and projects, processes and organizational structure. The candidate will have knowledge of soil and rock properties, rock drilling and basic knowledge in civil explosives over and underground. Will have the knowledge about tunnelling and tunneling methods both conventional and mechanical, vibrations problems and solutions, construction machinery, loading and hauling and planning of construction projects.

Engineering Geology:
The course will provide students with an overview and understanding of the material characteristics of rocks and soil, water problems in the rock masses, engineering geological challenges, rock stresses, rock mass classification, support and lining methods in tunnels, design of underground caverns, slope stability, engineering geological conditions that affect stability of facilities above and underground.

Skills
Construction Engineering:
The candidate should be able to calculate time and cost for construction work, determine drilling and initiation plans for blasting work over and underground. Be in involved in vibration calculation and control; be familiar with construction economics related to heavy construction machines. The candidate must be able to perform a bid calculation with prices in Focus Anbud program, plan a project manually and using Microsoft Project.

Engineering Geology:
The candidate should be able to map the weakness zones and discontinuities rock masses, determine the effect and influence of rock stresses on tunnels and rock caverns, classify rock masses and determine the needed support, design underground openings, determine support and reinforcement of rock slopes. The candidate should also have skills in the most important investigation and test methods in lab and field, and be able to make basic engineering geological assessments.

General Competence:
Construction Engineering:
The candidate will be familiar with the use of various construction machines, acquire basic estimation and cost control skills, acquire basic planning skills. The candidate should be able to use spreadsheets and other software to manage construction projects, learn how to calculate, monitor and influence production processes. Will carry a good understanding of material behavior, develop good understanding and involvement in health and safety procedures (HSE), grow teamwork and communication skills, and finally yet importantly, feel a sense of professionalism and encouraging ethical practices.
