About this course
Content
Part I: Introduction to Structural design: How to understand the behaviour of different structures like trusses, beams, columns, frames, plates, shells and curved elements. The design process applied to simple structures of steel and wood. Load calculations due to self weight, payloads, snow and wind loads. One laboratorial task in model building.
Part II: Statics:Differential equation for beams, virtual work, calculations of deflections in beams, trusses and frames. Determination of moment, shear- and axias forces of statically undeterminated structures. Influence lines. Introduction to matrix methods mith applications to beams and frames. Theory of bucling.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
The candidate shall have knowledge of the basic elements used in building constructions and how these are put together to design systems.
The candidate shall have an understanding of the static behavior of simple structures, further have knowledge of the most common loads that building structures are exposed to. The candidate shall have knowledge about design process with applications in steel and wood, knowledge about finding section forces in beams, simple frames and trusses by using classical methods and matrix Methods.
Skills:
The candidate shall be able to calculate the snow, selfweight load, wind and payloads on simple building structures according to European standard (EN). The candidate must be able to identify the static behaviour for regular construction systems. Furthermore, the candidate may calculate cross-sectional capacity in beams and bucling load for simple columns of wood and steel.
In Statics the Candidate should be able to calculate the forces on beams, trusses and simple frames. The candidate shall be able to apply matrix Methods to find forces on beams and frames.
The candidate shall be able to calculate the buckling load for simple columns.
General competence:
The candidate shall have an understanding of the statical behaviour of structures and methods to calculate the forces and moments for beams, trusses and frames.
The candidate shall know how structures are exposed to different types of loads and how the calculation of those are safely taken care of by European standards.
