Advanced framebuilding

The course is based on the course TBBY1014 introduction to rod constructions. Through own work and / or collaboration in a group with guidance, the student will gain experience of going deeper into narrower topics within traditional rod constructions.

The teaching is collection-based and often linked to specific projects that are relevant. We can consider some of the different parts of stave constructions, such as more complicated roof constructions, or we can focus on specific local building traditions. Roofing and groundwork are also included here. Relevant restoration projects can be included as part of the course.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of: geographical and historical variation in rod constructions in Norway restoration methods for rod structures various marking systems for the construction of traditional rod structures

Skills

The candidate can:

• work in a pole building project in collaboration with other carpenters basic deflection technique for more complicated bar constructions / roof constructions map,
• identify and describe relevant damage to stave buildings and building parts as a starting point for measures in restoration work

General competence

The candidate can:

• document the structure and details of rod constructions
• describe the operation of different rod constructions
• use different types of sources to investigate local tradition within rod constructions

Exercises, excursions, fieldwork, seminars and lectures. The course is based on concentrated collections. Active participation in the sessions with the following exercises is necessary to be able to complete the course.
