Advanced Logbuilding

The course is based on the course TBBY1010 introduction to carpentry.

Through own work, collaboration in groups with guidance, the student will gain experience of going deeper into narrower topics in traditional carpentry. The teaching is collection-based and often linked to specific projects that are relevant.

We can consider some of the different parts of log houses, such as floors / floor joists, roof constructions, roofing, combination buildings with horizontal timber and poles, foundation wall / foundation and the like. We can also focus on specific local / regional carpentry traditions, historic log houses or different types of tools / technology.

Relevant restoration projects can be included as part of the course.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of: marking and chopping of various log forms and nover in Norwegian carpentry restoration methods for log houses geographical and historical variation in carpentry in Norway

Skills

The candidate can:

• work in carpentry projects in collaboration with other carpenters mark and chop at least 2 different nov with traditional hand tools map,
• identify and describe some relevant damage to buildings and building parts as a starting point for measures in restoration work

General competence

The candidate can:

• document the construction and details of log houses and nover use different types of sources to investigate local carpentry tradition

Exercises, excursions, fieldwork, seminars and lectures. The course is based on concentrated collections. Active participation in the sessions with the following exercises is necessary to be able to complete the course. Excursions can be arranged as part of the teaching of the course. The course leader will inform the

students if the excursion is obligatory or optional at the start of the semester. Obligatory excursions

will be free of cost for all students. Students who participate in optional excursions must expect to

pay a small share of the expenses. For students who do not participate in optional excursions, an

alternative will be offered.
