About this course

Content

Theory and principles of slope stability evaluation is covered. Factors influencing stability are discussed. An introduction to submarine slides, effect of earthquakes and non-saturated soil is given. Design of direct foundations, supported walls, piled foundations and reinforced soil structures are addressed. The design philosophy of relevant Eurocodes is discussed. Calculation methods ranging from simple estimates and traditional limit equilibrium methods to finite element simulations are applied.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge The candidate should have knowledge of: - Landslide classification - Quantitative assessment of slope failure risk under various soil conditions such as drained, undrained, saturated or unsaturated. - The implication of earthquake loads on slope design - Foundation types (deep and shallow) and their range of application - Foundation design requirements and procedures - Finite Element and limit equilibrium analyses for foundations and slopes. - Design philosphy of Eurocode Skills The candidate is able to: - Identify different types of slope failures and possible reasons that lead to failure - Explain the difference between limit equilibrium and finite element analysis - Assess slope stability through limit equilibrium, finite element and hand calculations - Perform earthquake analyses for slopes (time history and simplified) - Perform serviceability and limit state design calculation for spread footings and piled foundations by use of limit equilibrium, finite element and hand-calculation methods. General competence The candidate can: - Independentplanning of own activity - Work in teams - Communicate orally and in writing - Demonstrate analystical competence, master relevant methods and make critical evaluations.

Teaching methods

Lectures, project work with practical field and laboratory exercises. Calculation by hand, by use of LEM-code SLIDE and by use of FEM-code PLAXIS.
