About this course

Content

This subject gives you the competence to explore your own solutions based on innovative use of AI and BIM-based technology. The result will be a feasibility study that you develop in a group of 2-4 students. The feasibility study can be prepared in collaboration with the industry. Findings from the feasibility study can be further developed in partnership with the innovation community at NTNU, or in a master's thesis. Emphasis is given to digital solutions, which can contribute to an increased degree of fact-based sustainability assessments in the life cycle of the built environment. Problem- and project-based learning provides good opportunities for a significant degree of independence in carrying out the feasibility study and experience with effective group work with the use of Virtual Design and Construction (VDC).

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, the student has the following learning outcome defined in the form of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge The student has:

  • knowledge of how future engineering tasks can be solved with the support of digital technology and changed work processes
  • knowledge of how digital technology can affect future engineering tasks
  • knowledge of interoperability
  • organizations working with digitization of the BAE industry
  • research in digitization / building information modelling (BIM) and multiple artificial intelligence (AI) based solutions.

Skills The student can:

  • apply AI and BIM based solution for engineering tasks
  • identify challenges and suggest solutions in the form of a feasibility study

General competence The student can:

  • develop a feasibility study for innovative digital solutions (software and/or processes) for the construction industry
  • explore digital tools in practical solution of engineering tasks
  • collaborate with other professionals and users with the support of digital technology for presentation and information exchange
  • experience with the use of Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) for solving project-based tasks

Teaching methods

Project- and problem-based learning that includes lectures, project work on own computer, exercises, group work and self-study. Parts of the course implementation will be gathering in groups. Teaching is adapted to support project implementation, with most teaching in the first part of the semester and most guidance in the last part. Teaching and supervision will be a combination of campus and online. Since this is an elective course, it must be expected that it may be difficult to avoid conflicts with times for other teaching. There is no compulsory attendance, but challenging academic requirements for submitted work, as well as active work individually and in groups.
