Digitalization in Construction Processes and Build Environment

The course deals with the construction process in light of the digital shift. The course focus the project manager’s new tasks and gives you a fundamental understanding of the digitized planning and construction process. The course will also include digital process modelling (BPMN). This course does not treat only use of new BIM based computer tools to solve today’s tasks, but also new ways to organize collaboration, decision making and information flow in the whole construction process. The basis for digital information flow is the common project model called Neste steg (similar to the English parallel called RIBA Plan of Work). The course also gives knowledge of the new international standard; ISO 19650 Organization of information about construction works. Both these frameworks are key to understanding the information flow between the parties of the construction process, looks at principles and solutions for development -, and exploitation of common digital model for the construction in design, construction and operation. How to organize the project in order to achieve data security is explained. Students solve project tasks in collaboration with a company in the construction industry

After completing the course, participants shall independently have: Knowledge about: - The structure of digital construction processes from start to end (see Bygg21 Neste steg/RIBA Plan of work). - Terminology for digital construction processes. - Principals for digital information flow in the building lifetime. - The impact of digitization in the construction industry. - Information production and information process (ownership, responsibility, tasks). - Need for information level of detail at different stages of the planning and construction process. - Routines for increased data security. - Standards for digital collaboration. Skills to: - perform a simple stakeholder analysis. - Organize a project with adequate roles that makes digital information flow possible. - Define appropriate requirements for digital information delivery in an AEC-project. General competence to: - Understand the possibilities and limitations in digitization of the construction process. - Plan and organize information management in AEC-industry. - Assess project manager’s tasks in a fully digital construction process. - Conceptually understand and have insight to exploit BIM in the building’s lifetime.

This course is problem-based (CDIO). The problem is developed by the students under supervision and in collaboration with a company in property development or construction industry. We will generally use digital tools, but none are specific to this course. Discussions and group work is key.
