Highway Design and Accident Risk

Focus is directed at the relations between highway design, traffic accidents and risks for existing roads and for road plans. Main topics: (1) Existing roads: Black spot analysis, methods of risk analysis and in-depth studies of accidents, design of the road and the road side. (2)Road plans: Horizontal and vertical alignment, sight distances, cross section profile and road side terrain, road standard and costs. (3) Risk management in The Norwegian Public Roads Administration and other transport organizations.

The goal of this topic is to provide advanced knowledge of how to design highways in order to achieve a high level of traffic safety and a good traffic performance within a sound economic framework. This requires good knowledge of the premises for the road design guidelines and practical experience in applying methods for analysis of accidents, road user behaviour and risks in the transport system.

Lectures, in combination with literature studies and teamwork. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
